Busy weekend!

Let's Paint New Mexico!

Dawn loved the idea of the “Doodle Challenge”so much, that she made three paintings over one weekend! She’s crazy like that.

Red Poppy and Hills 16 x 20 Inch Oil Painting

I love poppies.  I have never had luck growing them, so I paint them instead.

Poppy View 16 x 20 Inch Oil Painting

I love color.  I’m constantly thinking about color.  I think about how to make it brighter and more vivid.  I think about how to juxtapose it so that it screams or whispers.  I think about the emotion that different colors stir.  The strange thing about color is that it is an illusion.  We construct it in our mind.  That kinda freaks me out.  I wonder what is really there that I can’t see.  I love mystery!  Anyway, here is another colorful painting (in my head anyway) of what I imagine to be a crowd of red poppies in a natural amphitheater.

Busy Bee and Daisies 11 x 14 Inch Oil Painting on Canvas

For the last year, I have been doing monthly, on-line lessons with Nancy Medina.  I am almost at the end.  This is lesson 11, white daisies and a cute little bee.  That bee was hard!  I scraped him off eight or nine times.  Who would have thunk a little bee could take me hours to do?  The daisies just kinda flowed along, no problem, but that bee!  He gave me problems.  The good news is that I finally got it down and had plenty of bee painting practice in the process.

White Lilies Blue Vase 11 x 14 Inch Still Life Oil On Canvas

The more I stare at this, the more I like it.  Sometimes, it takes me a few days to really appreciate what I’ve painted.  I know the difference between what I had in mind and what my hand decided to do.  This was inspired by a monthly lesson I do with Nancy Medina of white lilies.
